Crowns & Bridges Q & A

What are Crowns?

Crowns are dental treatments used to protect and repair the teeth by covering a broken or damaged tooth with a natural-looking cap. Crowns are often made from porcelain or a combination or porcelain and metal for additional strength. Crowns are often placed on top of dental implants to create a natural-looking artificial tooth. Crowns are also used for cosmetic purposes, for example, to cover a tooth that is not attractive or doesn’t match the neighboring teeth due to staining or damage. Crowns can also provide a natural-looking protective covering for a tooth that is too damaged or decayed to be repaired with a traditional filling.

What Conditions Require Dental Crowns?

Dr. Shrestha and Dr. James will place crowns for a variety of cosmetic and restorative dental services. Some patients elect to cap their teeth with crowns to provide a uniform appearance, while other patients need crowns to protect and support their natural teeth, which may be damaged. Some of the conditions that our dentists treat with crowns include:

  • Restoring a weakened tooth
  • Covering a dental implant
  • Fixing a discolored or misshaped tooth
  • Capping a tooth for additional strength and protection following a root canal
  • Substituting a large filling
  • Attaching a bridge

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a dental apparatus of one or more artificial teeth that spans, or bridges, a gap due to a missing tooth or teeth. Gaps in the teeth allow the remaining teeth to shift out of position, which can cause problems with a person’s bite and appearance. A bridge is typically made from one or more false teeth attached with crowns that anchor to the teeth on at least one side of the gap.

Our dentists will apply bridges to address a variety of dental issues such as:

  • Correcting your smile
  • Returning proper chewing and speaking
  • Sustaining the shape of the face
  • Fixing bite problems
  • Keeping remaining teeth from shifting out of place
