Oral Surgery Q & A

What is Oral Surgery?

Oral surgery is used to treat and repair serious damage or conditions affecting a patient’s teeth, palate, lips, jaw, or face. Oral surgeries are used to treat obstructive sleep apnea, infections, or facial pain. Wisdom teeth removal is the most commonly practiced oral surgery, but there are many other reasons why a patient might need oral surgery. Dr. Shrestha, Dr. Rani James, and their colleagues at Round Grove Family Dentistry have extensive training and stay up to date with advances in oral surgery techniques to ensure their patients receive the best possible care. Before any surgery is carried out, each doctor will explain the procedure and answers any questions patients may have about their condition or the procedure.

What Conditions Are Treated With Oral Surgery?

Dr. Shrestha and Dr. James treat a wide variety of conditions and dental issues with effective and expert oral surgery.

These conditions include:

  • Impacted teeth
  • Dental implant placement
  • Extractions of multiple teeth
  • TMJ-related facial pain
  • Severe obstructive sleep apnea
  • An open bite
  • Asymmetrical facial appearance
  • A facial injury or birth defect
  • A receding chin or protruding jaw

Why are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

The wisdom teeth are the last to erupt, and many people experience issues because there is insufficient space in the jaw. Wisdom teeth are also often unnecessary for full dental health. When the wisdom teeth have insufficient space, the wisdom teeth force other teeth out of alignment, can damage a patient’s bite, and cause infection and inflammation. Sometimes wisdom teeth do not erupt correctly and crowd the roots of other teeth, forcing them out of alignment, which can damage the bite. If the wisdom teeth erupt incorrectly or become impacted, patients often experience quite a bit of pain. When patients begin to experience pain in the jaw, problems chewing, or headaches, they should make an appointment with one of our doctors to examine the wisdom teeth and overall oral health.
