Dentures Q & A

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth that a patient can remove. There are two main types of dentures: full and partial. In patients who are missing only some teeth, partials are used to fill in the gaps. When patients need to have all of their teeth removed, a full denture restores their smile.

How Long Does It Take to Get Used to Dentures?

Most patients get used to wearing their dentures after a couple of weeks, although some patients may take a little longer. To make the transition earlier, it is important to follow your dentist’s instructions for wearing the dentures during the first couple of weeks. Initially, patients are instructed to wear the dentures for a certain period of time each day to allow their gums to become used to the sensation and pressure associated with the new dentures. Reading aloud and singing can also help patients get used to speaking with their dentures in place. It is important to attend follow-up appointments with your dentist to ensure that the dentures fit correctly and that your gums are healthy.

How Do I Take Care of My Dentures?

Patients with dentures need to learn to take care of not only their dentures but also their gums. Partial and full dentures require proper care to maintain their appearance as well as the patient’s overall oral health. Dentures should be removed and rinsed after eating. Patients also need to clean out the mouth by gently brushing the gums. The dentures should be brushed at least once a day and removed and soaked overnight, then rinsed before being put back into the mouth. Special cleaning materials are available, and abrasive cleansers such as whitening toothpaste and bleaching products should not be used on the dentures. Dental check-ups are still necessary to monitor the health of the gums and soft tissue of the mouth. Dentures should always be handled carefully and stored in the appropriate container.
